Do I need to carry motorbike insurance?

You are required by law to have at least third party cover to use your motorcycle on the UK’s roads. If you don’t, you could easily lose your license as well as facing substantial fines.
That being said, a great many motorcyclists opt for a higher level of coverage that will protect them and their bike should anything happen. Motor biking can be dangerous, after all!

What are the differences between motorcycle insurance policy types?

Each insurer has different options and features, but almost all of them offer the standard ‘three tier’ insurance options:

  • Third party motorbike insurance – You are legally required to have third party cover which protects other drivers, vehicles and pedestrians in the event of any accident.
  • Third Party fire and theft motorcycle insurance – This is an upgrade to basic ‘third party’ cover. It protects you if your bike is ever stolen or if it is destroyed or damaged by fire.
  • Comprehensive motorbike insurance – Often called ‘full’ or ‘comprehensive’ cover, this will cover harm to you and to your vehicle in the event of an accident, in addition to the benefits of the first two tiers.
What makes motorbike insurance cost more? What makes it cost less?

Your premiums will be determined by a number of factors, some unique to particular insurers. They will typically include things like:

  • Your age (getting lower as you get older)
  • Where you live (considering crime rates and other statistics)
  • How many miles you drive/ride per year
  • Whether you ride privately, or as part of your work
  • How many insurance claims you have made in the recent past
  • The type of bike you own
  • Any modifications you may have made to your bike
  • Whether you have an alarm or other security system installed
