How does pet insurance actually work?

Pet insurance is a way to make sure that, if anything bad ever happens to one of your pets, you have the resources to care for them properly. It can also protect you from liability if your pet causes damage to someone else’s property.

Depending on the details of your policy, pet insurance might pay some or all of the expenses is your pet should become injured or fall ill in some way.

Other types of policies will recompense you if your pet dies, becomes lost or even if they are stolen. Many will also pay out if your pet causes damage to someone else’s land or property, so you aren’t on the hook for the damages.

What is important when comparing pet insurance policies?

There are four main types or categories of pet insurance cover. Each is available in single-pet and multi-pet versions, with multi-pet policies often offering a discount for each additional pet covered. It is important to read all the policy’s T&Cs carefully, as they vary dramatically from provider to provider. These are the main types:

  • Accident only pet insurance – This type will pay out to cover some or all of your expenses if you pet is injured in an accident, or suffers certain other health issues.
  • Lifetime pet insurance – This provides ‘lifetime cover’, and helps to look after your pet across its entire life.
  • Maximum benefit pet insurance – This type is sometimes more useful in response to certain short-term pet health concerns, but some policies allow you to claim more than once for a single condition over time.
  • Time-limited pet insurance – This version tends to be less expensive, but only covers your pet for a certain time – typically 12 months.
